Boxwood

Trees and Shrubs

Since 1995, Kraxberger Farms has been committed to cultivating Boxwoods, a popular and versatile plant used nationwide in various applications. Landscape designers often utilize Boxwoods, also known as Buxus, for hedging purposes, incorporating various forms like Boxwood Cones, Obelisks, and spiral boxwoods to enhance doorways and driveways. Their versatility makes Boxwoods a preferred choice for commercial establishments such as hotels and parks.

Boxwoods Are Wildlife Deterrents against….

Boxwoods naturally resist deer and many common garden pests, making them an ideal choice for gardens prone to wildlife damage. This resilience ensures that boxwoods stay healthy and visually appealing without the need for chemical deterrents. Deer can be a significant challenge in various regions, but boxwoods effectively deter them, likely due to their unpalatable scent. At Kraxberger Farm and Boxwood Unlimited, deer aren’t a concern as they tend to avoid the nursery area, preferring other plants. Moreover, boxwoods show resistance to insects, primarily the boxwood psyllid, which is easily managed. While boxwood blight has received attention, boxwoods remain a timeless feature in elegant estates worldwide. Instances of phytophthora affecting certain boxwood varieties, such as Buxus, seem more prevalent in excessively wet, heavy clay soil. Fortunately, Oregon’s well-drained soil conditions reduce the risk of phytophthora ramorum (sudden oak death) survival. Any occurrences of boxwood blight in an Oregon nursery can be promptly addressed by removing the infected plants.

Versatility in Landscape Design

Boxwood plants offer unmatched versatility in landscape design, suitable for a wide range of styles from formal to informal gardens. They can be used as hedges, borders, focal points, or in container gardening, allowing for endless creative possibilities.

Year-Round Interest

With their evergreen foliage, boxwoods provide year-round interest in the garden, maintaining their lush green appearance even in the depths of winter. This ensures that the garden remains visually appealing in all seasons.

Dense Foliage

Boxwoods boast dense foliage that creates a full and lush appearance, making them excellent choices for creating privacy screens or defining garden spaces. The dense growth also helps to suppress weed growth, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

Pruning Tolerance

Boxwoods respond well to pruning and shaping, allowing gardeners to create precisely tailored designs. Whether sculpted into formal hedges or whimsical topiaries, boxwoods can be easily shaped to suit the desired aesthetic.

Adaptability to Different Environments

Boxwoods are adaptable to various soil types and light conditions, thriving in both sun and shade. This adaptability makes them suitable for a wide range of environments, from urban gardens to rural estates.

Longevity

With proper care, boxwood plants can live for decades, becoming valued fixtures in the garden for generations. Their longevity makes them a worthwhile investment for homeowners and landscapers alike.

Low Maintenance

Once established, boxwoods are relatively low-maintenance plants, requiring minimal watering and pruning. Their resilience to pests and diseases further reduces the need for chemical interventions, making them an environmentally friendly choice for sustainable landscapes.

Historical Significance

Boxwood plants have a rich history dating back centuries, with their use in formal gardens and topiary artistry tracing back to ancient times. Their enduring popularity throughout history speaks to their timeless appeal and enduring beauty in the garden.
